  1. 01Monaco issues no short-stay visas of its own: a stay of under three months needs a passport and, where France requires one, a Schengen visa
  2. 02Nationals of countries exempt from the Schengen visa need only a valid passport; others apply to the consulate of the Schengen country of first entry, and that visa then covers Monaco with no further formality
  3. 03At most 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area
  4. 04Staying more than three months a year, or settling, requires a Monaco residence permit

  1. 01Required for anyone aged 16 or over who stays in Monaco more than three months a year or settles there
  2. 02Accommodation in Monaco large enough for the household: owned (directly or through a company), rented under a lease registered with the Department of Tax Services, or shared with a close relative, spouse or partner
  3. 03Sufficient resources: a salary, professional income, or savings shown by a reference from a Monaco bank in the approved format; the sum judged sufficient is set by the bank, and no threshold is published
  4. 04Criminal-record extracts under three months old from every country of residence in the previous five years, a birth certificate and a sworn statement
  5. 05Non-EEA nationals — including UK nationals since 2021 — first need a type D long-stay visa for Monaco from the French consulate nearest their residence; EEA, Swiss and the other listed European nationals need no visa
  6. 06First permit 'temporary', valid one year (€80; renewal €40); 'ordinary' three-year permit after three years of residence (€100); 'privileged' ten-year permit after ten years (€160)

  1. 01Business permit from the Business Development Agency (foreign nationals apply for authorisation; Monegasques declare), online or on paper, with ID, birth certificate and a criminal-record extract under three months old; statutory review period 45 days from notice that the application is admissible
  2. 02The Agency's receipt confirming admissibility opens the residence-permit application
  3. 03Housing in Monaco, sufficient resources and a clean criminal record, as for every residence permit; non-EEA nationals first need a type D long-stay visa for Monaco from the French consulate nearest their residence
  4. 04A sole trader may register the business at home, for as long as the lease runs, if no clients are received there, no goods are stored or displayed, and no staff are employed (up to three businesses per household)
  5. 05After authorisation: NIS statistical number from IMSEE, declaration of existence to the Department of Tax Services, entry in the Trade and Industry Registry for a commercial activity only, and registration with CAMTI and CARTI
