What this route means

Tax implications:

Canada taxes residents on worldwide income, and residency turns on residential ties rather than on a day count alone. The Income Tax Act also deems a person resident if they sojourn in Canada for 183 days or more in a calendar year, so a full six-month visit sits directly on that line. A visitor who keeps a home, spouse and bank accounts abroad is normally a non-resident, but the assessment is factual and the 183-day rule can override it.

Important context

This is the closest Canada has to a digital-nomad arrangement, and it exists by omission rather than by design. The Regulations define "work" as an activity paid by wages or commission **or** one that competes in the Canadian labour market; a person serving foreign clients from a laptop is generally read as outside that definition, which is why Canada has never needed a nomad visa to permit the activity. What it does not give you is any status: six months, no permanent-residence clock, no family rights, and re-entry at an officer's discretion every time. Nationals outside the visa-exempt list — including Ukrainian and Russian citizens — need a temporary resident visa rather than an eTA, with biometrics and a full application, but the six-month rule and the work definition are the same once admitted.

A permanent resident who settles in Canada is a resident for tax purposes on the day residential ties are established, and is taxed on worldwide income from that day. Business profit is reported on form T2125 and taxed at ordinary progressive rates — see the three provincial schemes on this page for what that costs.

Important context

The main door, and the one that does not care who your employer is — which is exactly why it matters to a freelancer. There is no job offer requirement and no sponsor: you are ranked against everyone else in the Express Entry pool by a Comprehensive Ranking Score and invited if you clear the cut-off of the round. Two things the Regulations do not tell you and that change often enough to check before relying on them: the pass mark and the CRS cut-offs are set by ministerial instruction, and recent rounds have been increasingly category-based, favouring specific occupations, French speakers and people already working in Canada. Self-employment abroad counts toward the one-year experience requirement only if it meets the class definition of work experience — a point on which independent contractors are routinely questioned, so documentation of contracts, invoices and duties matters more for a freelancer than for an employee.

Important context

Not one programme but eleven — every province and territory except Québec and Nunavut runs its own streams, and several have entrepreneur or self-employment categories that the federal system lacks. That makes this the most likely permanent-residence route for someone whose profile does not score well in Express Entry, and the least summarisable: criteria, intake windows and occupation lists are provincial and change without federal notice. The binding condition is the one people underestimate — the nomination is granted on your stated intention to live in that province, and a nominee who lands and immediately moves elsewhere is acting against the basis on which they were selected. Federal allocations to the provinces were cut sharply for the 2025–2027 immigration levels, so nomination spaces are scarcer than the programme descriptions suggest.

A working-holiday participant who spends most of a year in Canada normally becomes a tax resident and is taxed on worldwide income, including income earned remotely from clients abroad, at the rates of the province they live in.

Important context

The only route on this page that hands a foreigner an open work permit without an employer, an investment or a points score — and the narrowest. The 2026 participating list, read from IRCC's own eligibility page, is: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. Note what is absent: the United States has no youth mobility agreement with Canada, and neither does Ukraine, so neither passport can use this route. Five EU member states are also missing — Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta and Romania — so the audience recorded here overstates the EU case, and an EU passport holder must check their own country. Canada's Self-employed Persons Program has never been a route for freelancers, consultants or remote workers: the class is confined to cultural activities and athletics — musicians, coaches, artists, athletes — and an application from anyone outside that definition is refused without further assessment.
