  2. 02Proof of genuine and effective self-employed activity in Switzerland, assessed by the cantonal authority

  1. 01A place must be free within the annual federal quota: for 2026 the Federal Council set 8,500 permits for gainfully employed third-country nationals — 4,500 B residence permits and 4,000 L short-stay permits (UK nationals have a separate quota of 3,500)
  2. 02The admission must be in the overall Swiss economic interest (Art. 18 and 19 AIG); the authority weighs the labour-market situation, sustainable economic development and the applicant's capacity to integrate
  3. 03The self-employed activity must have a lasting positive effect on the Swiss labour market — a business plan covering planned activity, market prospects, hiring, investment and expected revenue is part of the file
  4. 04Priority of resident and EU/EFTA workers (Art. 21 AIG) must be respected — it applies 'in every case, in every economic and labour-market situation'
  5. 05Personal qualifications: manager, specialist or other qualified worker, normally a higher-education degree plus several years of professional experience
  6. 06Sufficient financial and operational basis for the business
  7. 07Application through the cantonal migration and labour-market authority, with federal approval
