Getting in

Who can enter Armenia and on what terms — visa-free windows and entry visas.

Visa-free stay (180 days per year)

activeVisa-free stay

For: US citizens, UK citizens, EU citizens, Ukrainian citizens, Russian citizens

Duration
6 months
Path to PR
No
Requirements (3)
  • Passport of a nationality on Armenia's visa-free list (US, EU/Schengen, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and CIS states including Russia and Ukraine)
  • Up to 180 days of stay within any one-year period, visa-free
  • No work-purpose restriction is published for remote work performed for foreign clients during a visa-free stay

Tax implications: Tax residency is generally triggered by 183 days of presence in a 12-month period or centre of vital interests; a stay within the 180-day visa-free allowance sits just under that line.

Modelled for the citizenship groups in our registry; the full visa-free list is longer. 180 days/year is the standing rule (distinct from a separate temporary Jan–Jul 2026 residence-permit-holder exemption). CIS nationals (incl. Russia, Ukraine) enter visa-free under bilateral/CIS arrangements. The MFA visa page is behind a bot-protection wall; re-verify the exact per-nationality durations from a browser next cycle.

Staying long-term

Grounds for residence — business, employment, special programs — with the conditions to qualify.

Temporary residence — individual entrepreneur (sole proprietor)

activeTemporary residence

For: All citizenships

Duration
1 year, renewable
Path to PR
Yes
Family
Included
Fee
105,000 AMD
Requirements (4)
  • Register as an individual entrepreneur (IE / ինդիվիդուալ ձեռնարկատեր) in Armenia — open to foreigners; select a tax regime (turnover tax, high-tech 1%, or general)
  • No minimum income or investment threshold under the current (pre-November 2026) rules
  • Health documentation and proof of address in Armenia; apply in person at the Migration and Citizenship Service (moving to the digital permits.am / e-platform system)
  • From 2026-11-01 the reformed 'On Foreigners' law requires an individual entrepreneur to maintain roughly AMD 1,000,000 in the bank or equivalent 60-day turnover

Tax implications: The de-facto remote-worker route: as an IE the person chooses among the high-tech 1% turnover tax (if in the High-Tech Registry) or the 10% services turnover tax; a mandatory funded-pension charge on gross income applies on top. Tax residency after 183 days or centre of vital interests.related scheme →related scheme →

State fee AMD 105,000 through 2026-12-31, rising to AMD 150,000 from 2027-01-01. Temporary residence is issued for up to 1 year and renewed annually; 3 years of lawful residence opens permanent residence. A major immigration overhaul takes effect 2026-11-01 (digital platform, new financial-sufficiency condition for entrepreneurs) — re-verify the exact post-reform requirements then.

Temporary residence — employment

activeTemporary residence

For: All citizenships

Duration
1 year, renewable
Path to PR
Yes
Family
Included
Fee
105,000 AMD
Requirements (3)
  • Employment relationship with an Armenian employer (work-permit / invitation basis)
  • Health documentation and proof of address in Armenia
  • Apply at the Migration and Citizenship Service (transitioning to the digital e-platform)

Tax implications: Employment income taxed at the flat 20% personal income tax with employee funded-pension and stamp contributions withheld by the employer; not one of our freelancer schemes. Relevant to remote workers only as a pivot into the local market.

Included for completeness of the stay-grounds picture; it is employer-tied and not a freelancer route. Same fee schedule and 1-year renewable duration as the entrepreneurship permit.

Permanent residence (5-year card)

activeTemporary residence

For: All citizenships

Duration
5 years, renewable
Path to PR
Yes
Family
Included
Fee
140,000 AMD
Requirements (3)
  • At least 3 years of prior lawful residence in Armenia (via temporary permits), OR close family ties to an Armenian citizen/resident, OR ethnic-Armenian grounds
  • Proof of continued residence and lawful means of support
  • Apply at the Migration and Citizenship Service (moving to the digital platform)

Tax implications: Permanent residents choose the same tax regimes as any resident individual entrepreneur (high-tech 1%, turnover 10%, or general 20%).related scheme →related scheme →

State fee AMD 140,000 through 2026-12-31, rising to AMD 250,000 from 2027-01-01. Card valid 5 years, renewable. Classified in our schema as 'temporary-residence' (the closest enum value) even though Armenia calls it permanent residence, because it is a renewable multi-year card rather than an indefinite status. pathToPermanentResidence is true in the sense that it is the durable long-term status and a step toward naturalisation (generally after ~3 years of permanent residence for eligible applicants).

Special residence status (10-year card)

activeSpecial program

For: All citizenships

Duration
10 years, renewable
Path to PR
Yes
Family
Not included
Requirements (2)
  • Ethnic Armenian origin, OR foreigners carrying out significant economic or cultural activity in Armenia (granted by the President)
  • Special residence status is issued for 10 years and is renewable

Tax implications: Holders reside and may run a business on resident terms; same tax-regime choices as other residents.

Primarily an ethnic-Armenian / diaspora and discretionary status, not a general remote-worker route — included for a complete stay-grounds picture. Under the immigration overhaul this status is reported to be abolished from 2026-11-01 with existing holders transitioning to the 5-year permanent card (without the 3-year wait); re-verify the post-reform treatment after that date.
