RO · BRASOVLocal facts
Living in Brașov.
Transylvania's mountain city, set in a Carpathian basin at about 625 m, with a walled Saxon old town under Mount Tâmpa and the Poiana Brașov ski area within its boundary. Rents run just below Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest. No official 1991–2020 climate normal is published for any station in or near the city, so this page carries no monthly climate table rather than an estimate.

Items sum to ≈$508, the cost-of-living-single aggregate. National average; food dominates (Romania has the EU's highest food share of household spending).
Romania's household-budget basket for a single person, excluding rent. Non-rent costs vary little between cities — the city-specific part is rent, shown under Housing below.

What this measures
Monthly cost of a defined single-person basket (food, transport, utilities, mobile+internet, modest leisure) excluding rent, curated from national statistics office price data and large local retailers' published prices, converted to USD at the ECB rate recorded in fx-rates. The method field of each value itemizes the basket inputs.

Converted at the ECB reference rate in data/fx-rates.json (EUR 1 = USD 1.1534, 2026-08-13): $438 / $611 / $750. Year on year, Storia puts studios up 6%, 2 camere down 4% and 3 camere down 2%.
- Notes
- FLAT BY LOCATION. Storia publishes one city-wide average per room count and no district split for Brașov, so the centre and outside-centre columns carry the same number; they are not two observations. Neighbourhood averages that circulate in the local press mix all apartment sizes, which is why the new-build district of Tractorul reads dearer than the historic centre — they measure housing stock, not a location premium, and are not used. No 3-bedroom row: Storia's analysis stops at 3 camere. Romanian rents are quoted in euros.

Climate
Temperature and rainfall through the year, plus air quality.
01Climate comfortno verified data—
What this measures
Number of months whose 1991–2020 climate normals satisfy: mean daily maximum between 15°C and 28°C and monthly precipitation under 150mm. Computed from the city's climate-normals indicator; the raw normals are stored alongside so users can judge by their own taste.
Not recorded, because the monthly normals it is counted from do not exist to a checkable standard. No 1991–2020 normal is published for any station in or near Brașov; NOAA's daily archive holds only 20 of the 30 years for the Brașov-Ghimbav station; and that archive, checked against the four Romanian stations whose normals ARE published, ran up to 0.9 °C too cold at night and up to 58% off on monthly rainfall — enough to move a spring or autumn month across the 15 °C threshold. The county statistics office's yearbook gives Brașov county a July mean of about 18 °C and a January mean of about −5 °C.
02Air quality (PM2.5)14µg/m³, annual mean PM2.56.4
What this measures
Annual mean fine-particulate (PM2.5) concentration for the city, latest available year. Anchors follow the WHO 2021 guideline (5 µg/m³ → 10) through the EU limit value territory (25 µg/m³ → 2). Preferred source: European Environment Agency city-level air quality data; outside Europe: WHO Ambient Air Quality Database or the national monitoring network.

- Method
- Validated (E1a, verification flag 1) 2024 annual mean at station RO0119A "BV-2", an urban background site of the national network at 45.6522°N 25.5831°E, 1.1 km from the city centre: 13.990911 µg/m³ on 90.98% data coverage, queried from the EEA statistics service on 2026-09-24. The WHO Ambient Air Quality Database v8.0 (2026) gives Brasov/ROU 13.99 µg/m³ for 2024 at 91% coverage — the same measurement; its row lists three stations, but the EEA statistics hold no 2024 PM2.5 annual mean for the two urban-traffic ones, so the figure is BV-2's alone. Reference year 2024, the year used for the other European cities in this dataset.
- Notes
- One station, urban background, so this reads where people live rather than beside traffic. Steady rather than improving: 14.83 µg/m³ in 2020, 14.50 in 2021, 14.83 in 2022, 12.13 in 2023, 13.99 in 2024. A second urban background station, RO0223A "BV-6", sits 12.8 km west-north-west of the centre, beyond the municipal boundary, and read 19.94 in 2024 — not used, because it is not in Brașov. About 2.8× the WHO 2021 guideline of 5 µg/m³, and above the EU limit of 10 that applies from 2030.

01Domestic delivery qualitycountry-levelExcellent10.0
What this measures
Quality of in-country parcel delivery. excellent = nationwide next-day widely available, dense parcel-locker network, real-time tracking standard; good = 1–3 day delivery, lockers in major cities; basic = reliable but slow (3–7 days), mostly to-door or post-office pickup; poor = unreliable delivery, street addresses often unusable, informal workarounds common. 02International delivery easecountry-levelMinor friction7.0
What this measures
Ease of receiving goods from abroad. seamless = major international carriers deliver door-to-door, meaningful duty-free de-minimis threshold, customs clearance predictable in days; minor-friction = carriers present but low de-minimis, extra paperwork or routine delays; significant-friction = frequent customs holds, high brokerage fees, some marketplaces refuse to ship; unreliable = parcels regularly lost or blocked, informal import channels dominate. - Comprehensive private health plans that include hospitalization and surgery (outpatient + inpatient): Signal Iduna 360 Care starts 380 RON/mo, with a stated 34-year-old example at 424 RON/mo; premium all-inclusive tiers (Groupama, Regina Maria, MedLife/Medicover subscriptions with hospital cover) run up to ~650 RON/mo. Healthy-35-year-old midpoint ≈ 460 RON/mo ≈ 5,520 RON/yr ≈ $1,200; recorded $1,250 (range ≈ $1,000–$1,700 at 4.59 RON/USD). Premiums are quoted on request, so this is a curated market midpoint, not a public engine quote.
- Notes
- Residents are covered by mandatory public health insurance (CASS/CNAS); private cover is optional. Many buy only a cheaper outpatient medical subscription (abonament, ~150–250 RON/mo) and use the public system for hospital care. This figure is the with-inpatient comprehensive tier, chosen to be comparable with other countries' comprehensive plans.

Cambridge International's own school finder returns its results only in a browser, so, as for Porto and Nicosia in this dataset, the status rests on the school's statement rather than a direct read of the registry.

NOT COUNTED: Colegiul Național „Andrei Șaguna”, a Romanian state school that in July 2025 became the first state school in the country approved as a Cambridge International School — it teaches the Romanian curriculum with a Cambridge IGCSE/A Level track, the kind of school excluded here and for Cluj-Napoca; and Liceul Internațional PREMS, a private school on the Romanian national curriculum with Cambridge Primary material and Cambridge English exam preparation. The IB's country listing cannot be read (blocked, not archived), so an IB school here can be neither counted nor ruled out. The AEFE network's only Romanian location is Bucharest, and Germany's only recognised school abroad in Romania is the Deutsche Schule Bukarest; the Honterus national college, with its German-language classes, is a Romanian state school.

What this measures
How accepting the resident population is of migrants and foreigners — the inverse of xenophobia, a real concern for someone relocating. Our own five-band reading (very-open / open / moderate / reserved / low) informed primarily by the Gallup Migrant Acceptance Index (0–9 scale: three questions on migrants living in the country, becoming neighbours, and marrying into the family; 2019 wave), cross-checked where available with the World Values Survey wave 7 / European Values Study 2017 question on whether people would not want immigrants or foreign workers as neighbours (a higher share = more hostile). Banding guide against the Gallup 0–9 score: ≥7.0 very-open, 5.5–7.0 open, 4.0–5.5 moderate, 2.5–4.0 reserved, below 2.5 low (the 2019 global average of 5.21 sits in 'moderate'). Country level only: no credible city-level survey of attitudes to foreigners exists, so on city pages the country reading is shown as country context. Gallup is a research source cited with attribution, not republished in bulk; the raw index score/year and any cross-check figure are carried inside each value. Value shape: { band, gallupMai?, gallupYear?, unwantedNeighborPct?, unwantedNeighborSource? }. CASS 10% = 28,253.34; CAS band (>97,200) = 24,300; income-tax base 229,980.06 → 10% = 22,998.01. Total levies 75,551.35 → 24.07% ≈ 24.1%. The company route ro-micro-srl models a lower ~18% burden but omits the mandatory ≥1-employee salary cost, so it is not a like-for-like comparison and is not used as the headline.
M-Lab NDT country aggregates for Romania
Open data

- Median of 343 daily country medians, 112,070 tests (2023 — latest full year in M-Lab's public stats API; the 2024 file covers only 86 days and 2025 is not yet published).
- Notes
- M-Lab NDT is single-stream and reads below Ookla-style figures — comparable only within this criterion. Romania is known for very fast, cheap fibre; the true typical fibre speed is far higher, but only M-Lab is used here for cross-country consistency.

Knowledge Tree International School (KTIS) — accreditations: Cambridge International School
Curated by SettleMetric
- Data as of
- Sep 24, 2026

- Sep 24, 2026
- Method
- Counted: Knowledge Tree International School, which states Cambridge International School status with Cambridge Primary and Secondary programmes through IGCSE and A Level, taught bilingually; its recognition by ARACIP as a foreign school in Romania is stated as in progress. Cambridge International's own school finder returns its results only in a browser, so, as for Porto and Nicosia in this dataset, the status rests on the school's statement rather than a direct read of the registry.
- Notes
- VERIFIED FLOOR, ±1.

Cash-payment limits exist (business ~5,000–10,000 RON/day tranches under Law 70/2015) but personal money movement is free. Low state control over personal money flows. SettleMetric computation over climate-normals (none available for Brașov)
Curated by SettleMetric
- Data as of
- Dec 31, 2020
- Verified
- Sep 24, 2026
- Method
- Not computed: this count is derived from the city's climate-normals row, which is empty for Brașov.
- Notes
- Not recorded, because the monthly normals it is counted from do not exist to a checkable standard.
